Two dramas, “It’s not the Test!” and “Miracle of Faith,” by freelance journalist and novelist, Carla Charter of Phillipston, MA will be featured at the Drama Circle on Saturday, July 9 from 2:00 - 5:00 pm. at 7 East Main Street, Orange, Massachusetts.  The Drama Circle is dedicated to original works of the stage and screen and is open to the public free of charge.  


“It's Not on the Test!” is a story about a gifted child with learning disabilities who must deal with the way others think, disorganization, bullying and the dreaded standardized tests.   “A Miracle of Faith” is set on Christmas Eve in a neighborhood church in a poor section of town where an elderly woman encounters two strangers, adrift in the world with no place to spend the night.

Comedy “P.A. (Playwrights Anonymous)" Featured at The Drama Circle, Saturday, June 11 in Orange, MA

P. A. (Playwrights Anonymous) featured Saturday, June 11th


The comedy, “P. A. (Playwrights Anonymous),” by South Carolinian award winning playwright, Rene Plante will be the featured reading at The Drama Circle on Saturday, June 11 from 2:00 - 5:00 pm. at 7 East Main Street, Orange, Massachusetts.  The narrator for the day’s reading will be his niece, Orange resident, Charlene Deam.  The Drama Circle is dedicated to original works of the stage and screen and is open to the public free of charge, according to organizer and artistic director Genevieve Fraser.  

“’P. A. (Playwrights Anonymous)’ features six characters addicted to playwriting that belong to Playwrights Anonymous,” Plante explained. “The play takes us to one of the support group meetings. All have pledged never to write another play as long as he/she lives, but, in fact, each one is still addicted, as evidenced by the unbelievable confession each one makes at the therapy session,” he said.

Novelist, David Plante

Playwright, Rene Plante, is a retired naval captain who began writing plays later in life and is the author of eight full-length, four one-act, and several so-called 10-minute plays. He's a past president and current member of Scriptwriters of S.C. Inc.  Rene’s brother is the novelist, David Plante, whose “Difficult Women” (1983), a memoir of his relationships with Jean Rhys, Sonia Orwell, and Germaine Greer was nominated for the National Book Award. 

According to Rene, his bother David told the playwright Edward Albee (author of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf") that his brother (Rene) had gotten interested in writing plays.  “David told me that Albee's response was something like, ‘Tell him to run as fast as he can in the opposite direction!’  Today, I'm glad I didn't run,” Plante admits.

Genevieve Fraser Announces Rebirth of The Drama Circle

Rebirth of The Drama Circle - June 11 in Orange, MA

The Drama Circle, dedicated to original works of the stage and screen, is about to be reborn, according to organizer and artistic director Genevieve Fraser.  Readings are scheduled for the second Saturday of the month, starting on Saturday, June 11 from 2:00 - 5:00 pm.  Formerly housed at Mount Wachusett Community College, The Drama Circle is now sponsored by the performing arts division of the non-profit organization, Art for Life, at 7 East Main Street, Orange, Massachusetts. 


"But this time around we're adding a new twist to The Drama Circle," Fraser stated. "Along with presenting original scripts, we'll also feature readings of scenes from classical theater pieces by Shakespeare, Chekhov, Ibsen and others." 


"The hope is that by reviewing classical theater, playwrights will develop a solid understanding of the elements needed to create a dramatic work.  But just as before, readings as well as the opportunity to submit scripts is open to anyone of any age or ability," Fraser added.  


The Drama Circle was originally organized in the mid-1990s and closed in 2002.

Future plans include producing staged readings and full productions at the Orange Town Hall.  

"One of the scripts presented at The Drama Circle from years past, 'Lincoln,' is by the nationally recognized author, Michael Riccards. I later adapted it as a musical with songs from the Civil War period. The Orange Town Hall would be a perfect venue for a world premier of this work, and Riccards, who is the former president of Fitchburg State College, has agreed," Fraser said.
